my family grew up taking videos on old camcorders. the ones that would record on tapes that we filled up way too fast. we had boxes and boxes of them. all having no indication of what was on them, meaning we would have to go through all of the footage to find the one video we wanted to actually watch. we didn't mind though, and we watched them often. all of us, gathered around the tv with snacks. reliving moments from weeks ago, years ago, or even just the day before. we would sit there and smile as we shared that experience again. over and over.
my mom was usually the one behind the camera. she would start every video with the date and names of who we were with and what we were doing. at the time we always thought it was silly, but looking back i see how important that was. she never really was the one in front of the camera, until i began to take over the role of being the one filming. still though, that footage of her is pretty limited.
to this day we still watch those tapes. not as often as before, making those times even more special. i am so grateful to have those moments preserved in a way i can relive forever. playing with my siblings, holidays, riding bikes, making dances. all of it. watching them back makes me realize just how fast it all goes.
i am so inspired by memories and human connection. thinking back on those old videos makes me want to give that to someone else. only this time, with every family member in the videos. mom too. being able to experience it all once again, and again, and again.
i want to document you and those you love. playing, laughing, dancing. doing those everyday things that would maybe feel silly to document. but you’ll miss the most.
my love for film being rooted in these old videos, made me want to carry that on for all of you. i bought my own camcorder and taught myself super 8 after tracking one down. both of them are so magical, i can not wait to show you.
spent a beautiful fall day with the sweetest family at their home, documented on my camcorder.
documenting their sweet babes first birthday on super 8.
